Assessing Noise Exposure Among Urban MP3 Player Users

In a bustling urban environment, portable listening device (PLD) use has become increasingly common, raising concerns about potential noise-induced hearing loss. A study, co-authored by Dr. Brian Fligor, investigates the noise exposure levels of college students using MP3 players as they entered a New York City campus.

The study aimed to measure the sound levels and usage duration of PLDs among 189 college students, ages 18–53. Researchers used a calibrated sound level meter to measure the free-field equivalent sound levels from PLD headphones on a head and torso model. Participants provided information on their demographics, the type of PLD and earphones used, as well as their daily and weekly usage patterns.

The findings revealed that a significant portion of participants exceeded recommended noise exposure limits. These results suggest that many individuals are at a higher risk for noise-induced hearing loss due to excessive sound exposure from their PLDs.
