The Risks of Portable Listening Devices
In an age where portable listening devices (PLDs) like earbuds and headphones are constantly used by teenagers, concerns about the potential for music-induced hearing loss (MIHL) are on the rise. A study with significant contributions from our very own Dr. Brian J. Fligor sheds light on this issue.
The study aimed to address several key questions including: How do volume control settings on PLDs relate to actual output levels? How do teens’ listening behaviors vary with background noise and noise isolation? Additionally, is there a correlation between self-reported listening levels and those measured in a laboratory setting?
To find some answers, the researchers conducted two experiments. Experiment 1 focused on evaluating the output levels of various PLDs using an acoustic manikin. This setup allowed them to assess how loud these devices could get, both with stock and accessory earphones. The results showed that PLDs have the potential to reach hazardous volume levels that could contribute to MIHL.
Experiment 2 involved a sample of 29 adolescents, ages 13 to 17, all with normal hearing. This part of the study combined survey measures of listening behavior and attitudes with actual output levels measured using a probe microphone. It was found that while some teenagers reported listening behaviors that increased their risk for hearing loss, the laboratory-measured listening levels did not always match up with what participants reported as their typical listening habits. This discrepancy highlights the need for more effective ways to understand and mitigate risky listening behaviors.
This research highlights the need for greater awareness among teenagers and their guardians about the risks of high-volume listening and the importance of safe listening practices.
