Overview
This externship requires the student to have an exceptionally strong background in diagnostics, differential diagnoses, and medical aspects related to auditory disorders. These include but are not limited to, surgical ears, sudden sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, hyperacusis, and misophonia. The student chosen for this externship will be supervised by two audiologists with over 10 years of experience in the field with a track record of successful externs (including former students who are current directors of their medical centers). The student chosen for this externship must be prepared to provide service to patients from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds (from hedge-fund managers to those who are unhoused) and diverse language backgrounds (we make copious use of remote simultaneous video interpreter service for people who have limited English proficiency). Strong technical and manual skills will be developed during this externship. This is an externship for an extremely strong student looking to be challenged.
JOB FUNCTIONS:
Application requirements:
- Transcripts from undergraduate and graduate school
- Letter of Intent
- Two or more letters of recommendation, with at least one from a current or former clinical preceptor
Externship expectations:
This externship will be headquartered at our Boston, MA, location, but strong emphasis is placed on the extern spending 40% (2 days/week) at our Beverly, MA office, which does require personal vehicle. If the extern requires an externship solely at an office accessible by public transportation, this is possible. Externship runs from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025, and allows reasonable time off for academic and personal responsibilities, as well as volunteerism. Stipend of $30,000, paid in monthly installments, is allocated to offset living expenses. Students who are seeking ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence can complete the hours necessary to qualify for that certification, but this is not a requirement, nor explicitly encouraged.
Applications are accepted September 6, 2023 to September 30, 2023.
